The Marine Environmental Sciences program is the sole program of its kind in Israel, awarding graduates a B.Sc. degree in Marine Sciences. The program was established based on national economic forecasts according to which the economic, technological and scientific latent potential of the sea will soon be realized.
Marine biotechnology, which utilizes the wealth of the sea for the production of medication, food and base materials for medical and scientific research, has developed greatly during the 12 years since the school was established. Marine agriculture has also developed and expanded, an accelerated process of sea water desalination has begun, the scope of marine commerce has expanded and in the near future we can expect the construction of artificial islands, the drilling of natural gas wells and the expansion of ports.
Emerging technologies guarantee that farther in the future we will be able to harness the force of waves and wind in order to produce energy from the sea. The realization of the potential of the Mediterranean Sea as an economic and ecological resource is in its infancy. The School of Marine Sciences is diligently working to develop new study programs that will award degrees in the fields of Marine Biotechnology, The Sea as a Resource and Ecology and the Mediterranean Sea Environment.
Thanks to its proximity to the sea and its teachers, the School of Marine Sciences maintains research collaborations with leading researchers from the universities. The flowing sea water and molecular biology laboratories enable modern, advanced research of marine organisms and the marine environment. In order to implement the new study programs and to develop research at the School, a modern, "green" environmentally friendly campus, which will be adapted to the landscape and utilize the environment and the sea, is slated for construction.
