Computer Engineering Department
Department Head: Prof. Pinchas Dahan
Program Head: Dr. Yocheved Dotan
Objectives
The main objective of the program is to train computer engineers for activity as team members in the spheres of hardware and software, in a wide range of positions in the advanced hi-tech industry, including development of computer systems, RT systems, DSP systems, VHDL engineering, systems engineering, software engineering, applied engineering, systems analysis etc.
To foster abstraction skills and the ability to solve research and applied problems
To enable students to acquire a firm base for continued studies for advanced degrees in
computer engineering, computer science and electronic engineering.
Characteristics
The program is unique among Israeli colleges and combines inculcation of profound knowledge in electronics and computer sciences with sensitivity to the needs and demands of the advanced hi-tech industry. The program:
Fosters understanding of physical processes and calculative thinking and offers technological know-how.
Trains students for work with tools for analysis, planning and development of hardware and software including: Open GL, Green Hills RTOS, C#, Labview, Quartus II, Zilinx, Matlab, Pspice.
Enables study of the unique elective cluster of medical systems engineering. The cluster combines the life sciences with computer engineering and grants a basic background in physiology and computerized measurement of biological signals.
Provides practical experience of planning while utilizing the FPGA development environment and the Xilinx language, analysis of software systems and their development through utilization of UML and the C# language, construction of compilers through utilization of the LEX and BISON tools, and creation of communication between computers.
Enables utilization of modern laboratories and familiarizes students with such industrial tools as: the PIC processor, Xilinix, Quartus II, VHDL, Green Hills RTOS.
Enables implementation of an applied final project in collaboration with hi-tech industry, large concerns such as GE and ECI and start-up companies.
Includes management studies with the aim of training the future engineer for team work and acquisition of managerial skills which affect the level of implementation and success of projects.
Curriculum
The four-year program in computer engineering bestows a B.Sc. degree (165 credit points)
In the first and second years the student acquires thorough knowledge of mathematics and physics and basic knowledge of the principles of programming and is exposed to basic technological subjects.
In the third year elective clusters are offered in : computer communications, signal and picture processing, computer networks, software systems and medical systems. The students participates in a workshop in software engineering and attend electronics and microcomputer laboratories in which the theoretical knowledge can be applied.
In the fourth year study of elective clusters in state of the art laboratories promotes advanced know-how and practical experience. The engineering project is implemented in collaboration with the hi-tech industry. The student devises a solution to an engineering or research problem in the forefront of technological know-how, on the basis of the skills, know-how and tools acquired in the courses of studies.
Employment
All the Department's graduates find their niche in the labor market or continue their studies for graduate degree in electrical and computer engineering at universities, and in such hi-tech concerns as Audio Codes, TI, GE, ECI and start-up firms.
