Yuval Jacobi

MSc in Zoology
BSc in Marine Sciences and Marine Environment

“Upon completing my degree in marine sciences, I immediately began graduate studies in cooperation with the Faculty of Marines Sciences and the Department of Zoology at Tel Aviv University. Throughout my master’s degree studies, I researched filtration among marine invertebrates with the guidance of Prof. Gitai Yahel (Ruppin) and Dr. Noa Shenkar (Tel Aviv University). I performed the majority of my research at Mikhmoret, using the advanced equipment and labs of the Faculty of Marine Sciences. I completed my master’s degree and intend to continue on to a doctorate soon. I always have loved the sea and wanted to study marine biology. I chose Ruppin thanks to the recommendation of a good friend who studied at Mikhmoret before me.

Two main factors distinguish studies at Mikhmoret, in my opinion. The first is the personal attention. As an undergraduate, I got to know all the members of the faculty and administrative staff and more importantly, they all knew me by my first name. That may seem like a small detail, but it has implications regarding the extent of assistance and attention that I enjoyed as a student. It was only when I began to study at the university too for my graduate degree that I realized that this warm, personal attention is not something to take for granted.

The second key aspect of the Faculty of Marine Sciences is its physical proximity to the sea. This creates a real connection between the theoretical material that is taught in classes and the real world. For example, it is much easier (and much more fun) to study marine invertebrates after seeing them with my own eyes in the littoral course during my first year of studies.

I just finished my master’s degree and am going to begin working on my doctorate soon. Even though I am still a student, I’m in a research track that pays me to study/research so I see this as an ideal position. It is fun at Mikhmoret, come and see! However, remember this is a scientific degree so the studies are definitely not easy. Those who come here need to understand that in order to succeed, they must work hard. That said, there is an incredible atmosphere here (Just ask someone about the ‘Sea Day’...).”

Meirav Hadari

Biologist at the Seambiotic company, which specializes in cultivating micro algae in the food supplements field
BSc in Marine Sciences and Marine Environment

“A year after graduation, I continued onward to a master’s degree in environmental studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. I conducted my research in the Yigal Allon Kinneret Limnological Laboratory of the Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research institution. For the past two years, I have worked as a biologist at the Seambiotic company, which specializes in cultivating micro algae for the food supplements industry. My work introduced me to the world of aquaculture, which I discovered is a wide-ranging field with a huge economic market. I have traveled to Japan and the US and met with professionals and investors from all over the globe.

I found studying at Mikhmoret gratifying and enriching. I made life-long friends, people who are original and take initiatives. I racked up countless cruises, dives, and surfing hours. In my experiences, the level of both the studies and the students at the Mikhmoret campus are among the highest in Israel. The general knowledge of sciences is equal to and perhaps even higher than among students in parallel programs at recognized academic institutions.

I expect that alumni of marine sciences will become leaders in the near future in the fields of aquaculture, environmental management, and management of the State of Israel’s water systems. In addition, I met my husband Shai at Mikhmoret. He works in the logistics department of Zim and today we are the parents of Yaheli (3.5) and Tamar (six months).”

Karine Weiss

Veterinary student at the Faculty of Agriculture of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem
BSc in Marine Sciences and Marine Environment

“For as long as I can remember, I have been interested in veterinary studies. During high Faculty, I took a diving course and immediately fell in love with the sea in an extraordinary way. My curiosity about marine animals and the huge underwater world that we live next to only grew with time. When I sought an undergraduate program in biology that would meet the requirements for pre-veterinary studies, I discovered the fact that there is biology degree that also includes studying the sea and I immediately knew that was it – I had found my opportunity to really learn about the sea in all of its aspects. When I looked into it more closely, I discovered that the Faculty of Marine Sciences at Ruppin offers both an educational and pleasant experience.

The courses at the college are quite varied and provide both a theoretical and practical background. In addition to all the fun attractions that marine sciences have to offer, the way that the lectures are delivered, the personal attention the lecturers lavish on students, and the family-like atmosphere at the college are advantages not found elsewhere.

Those interested in this and those wondering where this degree can lead them: A degree in marine sciences can open the door to veterinary or medical studies (in the four-year track) and to a wide variety of master’s degree programs since the degree also provides students with basic research tools along with research tools specifically for marine sciences.

Today I am a veterinary student at the Faculty of Agriculture of the Hebrew University and I feel that the scientific tools and way of thinking that I received at Mikhmoret help me greatly. I strongly recommend not to miss the activities that the marina offers and of course not to miss the opportunity to volunteer at the Sea Turtle Rescue Center.”
